About the Instructor

Yoga for Kids classes are a space in which children can develop a love of movement as they experience their growing and changing bodies.

Yoga for Kids classes contain yoga poses, breathing exercises, games, concentration exercises, movement, dance, song, relaxation, meditation, stories and even a bit of sign language.

Classes facilitate children’s natural love of learning and give many new experiences to enjoy.  We recognize that each child is unique so provide a great variety of activities!  Kid’s are introduced to brief relaxation exercises also.

The focus is on fun, lightness and ensuring all kids feel at ease.

Benefits of Kid’s Yoga

Yoga is a great way for your child to develop:

v Flexibility

v Co-ordination

v Concentration

v Imagination

v Relaxation

v Fun

v Development

v Connection

An added benefit is that they will gain coping skills which help with learning in the class room.

What happens in the class?

We understand that kids of different ages have different needs.  For younger Kids, we will bark like dogs in dog pose, try to balance on one trunk in tree pose and relax and float in cloud pose, go on many adventures, sing many songs and play lots of games.  With older kids, more emphasis will be placed on postures, breathing exercises, movement and relaxation, in a fun context.

About the Instructor

Bonnie Russell has a passion for Kid’s Yoga!   Some say this is because she is just a big kid herself!  All her classes have a natural child-like energy about them.  Bonnie is considered Melbourne’s expert in Yoga for Children and is often consulted for advice.

Bonnie started off teaching Children’s yoga in 2001, now having experience in teaching in yoga schools, kindergartens, playgroups and has taught caregivers how they might bring yoga into their care of children.

Through her work, Bonnie has developed strong interest in children with disabilities and has worked with schools and day care centres to develop yoga programs for these groups also.

Class Information

‘Wu Shu’ means ‘martial art’. Wu Shu is also known as Kung Fu. The actual meaning of Kung Fu is skill, or how good a person is at something. So the two words (Wu Shu or Kung Fu), mean ‘skill in martial art’.

In this Wu Shu class, kids are firstly taught how to make their bodies more flexible through stretching exercises and strong through stance work, gymnastics and body conditioning exercises.

Following this, kids are then taught faster moving routines made up of punches, kicks, blocks, evasions, grapples, strikes, holds, spins, jumps, sweeps etc.

When the student is skilful in these techniques, they are then taught fast moving sets of martial movements which copy the movements of wild animals, like; the tiger, leopard, monkey ,snake, crane, eagle, dragon etc.
